Beata Manthey says the recent market selloff and economic resilience can help global equities rise in the next nine months. But she’s not so keen on Australia.

Beata Manthey, Citi’s global equity strategist, says it can be hard to make the case for equities in a world full of risks: rates, recession, inflation and, of course, geopolitics., is building a case that stocks can rally, with her forecasts suggesting upside of 12 per cent and 13 per cent by the middle of next year. The argument goes like this.

Finally, Manthey argues it’s important to realise that equity markets have come back, with the MSCI World Index down 5.4 per cent since the start of August. Regional and sectoral differences also matter. Manthey’s cautious optimism will come as a relief to Australian investors, including superannuation fund members, who have just suffered through a second consecutive month of negative returns.
