A new book looks at the bumpy career of Emily Weiss, the enigmatic founder of Glossier.

Marisa Meltzer never meant to write a book about Glossier, the US-based beauty company that has finally started to ship to Australia.

Launched in 2014 with an initial range of just four products, Glossier grew out of Weiss’ popular blog, Into the Gloss, itself a side hustle she started when working at. Using Instagram – then a nascent social media platform – Weiss promoted the brand and used crowdsourced feedback to create, shape and name new products.

In fact, this desire to be taken seriously is parallel to the way Meltzer feels about the beauty industry in general. Though Meltzer wasn’t able to uncover exactly why Weiss stepped down, she estimates that she still owns about 20 per cent of the company. As for what’s next, Meltzer wonders how Glossier can retain its edge when it’s now sold in Sephora in the US and Canada and ships worldwide.
