John Paul DeJoria co-founded two iconic brands, Paul Mitchell hair care and Patrón tequila — only because he figured out how to deal with rejection, he says.

Dealing with rejection is tough, but it's a necessary skill to master if you want to be successful, according to. "If you're prepared and you know you're going to get a lot of rejection, then it's not going to affect you. It's not going to hurt you. You can learn from it."

"You knock on lots of doors. People will not let you in," DeJoria says. Those jobs taught him how to deal with rejection without letting it bother him, which became important when he teamed up with hairstylist Paul Mitchell in 1980 to launch the eponymous business.in annual sales, setting DeJoria up to pour "several million" of his own dollars into co-founding Patrón in 1989, he says.
