Deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi says there is tremendous potential to be explored between the two countries.

Deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi witnessing the exchange of documents between Halal Development Corporation CEO Hairol Ariffein Sahari and deputy managing director of Aeon Co Bhd Tsugutoshi Seko.

The first MoU signing ceremony involved Halal Development Corporation and Aeon Co to promote Malaysian halal products in Japan. The signing ceremony here was witnessed by deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in his capacity as chairman of the Malaysia Halal Council, and HDC chairman Khairul Azwan Harun.

The focus will be on human capital development and expertise sharing to streamline halal certification processes for restaurants in Japan. In his address, Zahid said the meeting laid a stronger foundation and marked a new chapter in empowering continuous cooperation between Malaysia and Japan, particularly towards enhancing international halal practices and standards.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said micro, small and medium entrepreneurs (MSME) at the village level should capitalise on this to explore more market opportunities overseas, including in Japan. Therefore, Ahmad Zahid, who is also Malaysia Halal Industry Development Council chairman, said the production of ingredients including for halal products under the programme would be integrated. “It (One Village One Product Programme) is already there but I am proposing that it be integrated because just one village is not sufficient (to produce products or ingredients). Maybe 50 to 100 villages should combine to produce the same product. “Not necessarily end products but ingredients too would be helpful because the demand is high and we should seize this opportunity
