Irondequoit, N.Y. — Rochester Regional Health, in a partnership with the University Preparatory Charter School for Young Men, gave students an opportunity to explore the world of health care Thursday."It's really an opportunity to bring kids, especially students of color, here to see what we do when it comes to health care," said Lonie Haynes, chief diversity, health equity, inclusion and justice officer at RRH.
They also had an opportunity to talk to industry professionals and ask questions about the work that they do. "We were just thinking about how we can expose these young men to different fields, non-traditional fields," said Jamaal Peavy, UPrep's director of student family community support and engagement. "Especially Black and brown boys in our community, not being in the health care field as much, we wanted to expose them now, even at the age of sixth, seventh and eighth grade, to be able to see if this is something that triggers them to be able to pursue in their futures.
