The East India Company's history is much more interesting than our simplistic, hero/villain narrative, writes Professor Tirthankar Roy

Beecham House, a new ITV show depicting a former East India Company trader in the nineteenth century, has faced criticism for its comparatively sympathetic portrayal of its protagonist. Earlier films and programmes like BBC’s Taboo, the popular 1980s sitcom The Jewel in the Crown and even the Pirates of the Caribbean series have portrayed Company officials in an overwhelmingly negative light.

 

What rot.

Its incredible that a british tea company was able to effectively take over a country the size of india.
