A company not involved in the partial demolition of the historic Fifth Ward meetinghouse is now facing backlash for the destruction.

Friday marked six days since the owner of the historical building wiped out part of the structure. Since then, people have been calling the wrong company — Paul Davis Restoration — thinking they were involved.

"The fence is bolted tight, and the links are close enough to where it’s difficult for anyone to jump over the fence. It’s a deterrent," said Brent Roberts, who works in business development and marketing at Paul Davis Restoration of Utah.

He said that once the signs with their phone numbers were on display, people assumed Paul Davis Restoration was responsible for the demolition of the historical building. He said he knows the meetinghouse holds a lot of history and understands why people felt the need to call. "It is our role to protect the property, not just a simple misunderstanding," Roberts said. "We appreciate the community, and we hope this will be resolved quickly."

This week, the Salt Lake City council announced it supports an investigation into the incident and will bolster efforts to protect the city’s historic sites.
