The Academy award-winning actor recently bought a stake in Leeds United

Film star Russell Crowe has backed the new Leeds United ownership to make his beloved football club successful once again. Crowe, who is a well known Leeds supporter, recently bought a small stake in the club following the majority purchase by 49ers Enterprises from Andrea Radrizzani last summer.

The Australian is no stranger to sport investments, having been a long-time owner of NRL rugby league club South Sydney Rabbitohs, who won a Grand Final under his ownership. Speaking on the Chris Moyles Show this morning to discuss his Glastonbury debut, fellow Leeds United fan Moyles asked Crowe about his recent purchase of a stake in Leeds and his hopes for the future of the club.

“It just came up about a year ago or something when the 49er family was organising what their future plans are going to be," said Crowe when discussing his minority stake in the club. "And so, you know, the thing came down the line. While Crowe's stake in Leeds is currently only a minor one, he did previously come very close to buying the club he has now revealed. While his interest in the purchase of the club has been discussed many times, the actor says he was in reality a phone call away from owning the club around the time Massimo Cellion took over as chairman in 2014.
