Acquisitions such as that of the National Bank of Kenya, regional partnerships and a capital-raising drive are fuelling Access Bank’s transition from regional to African banking champion.

More recently, on 19 April, shareholders at Access Holdings, the bank’s parent company, agreed on plans to raise around $1.8bn, with analysts saying part of the funds may be used for the NBK acquisition. Some $1.5bn will come through a share sale or bond offering, and N365bn through a rights issue.
