Challenges, opportunities for political parties ahead of elections

The Electoral Commission of South Africa recently announced that it had received 47 political party applications, bringing the total of registered national political parties ahead of the elections to 285.

South Africans will be spoiled for choice, with no fewer than 233 parties on the ballot paper when they take to the polls in May. The Electoral Commission of South Africa recently announced that it had received 47 political party applications, bringing the total of registered national political parties ahead of the elections to 285.

The IEC also said earlier this year that it was processing a further 37 new applications – putting the number of new parties at 84. To discuss this further Leadership expert Dr Mazwe Majola spoke to SABC News DSTV channel 404 presenter Kershnee Govender.
