A contentious Swatara Township Board of Commissioners meeting on Wednesday night preceded the decision to remove the Friendship Fire Company of Bressler as part of the township’s fire and rescue emergency services
The board’s other three members, Shane Steele, Shaela Ellis and Thomas Connolly voted yes to remove the Friendship Fire Company —After Wednesday night’s meeting, Swatara Township, which is home to about 25,000 residents, was left with three active fire companies — Swatara, Chambers Hill and Rutherford.
The report contained information from interviews, including firefighters within the fire company and the social club, citing discrimination based on race. Several members of the community spoke before the board voted, bringing up issues with transparency surrounding the allegations of racial discrimination at the fire company’s associated social club and concerns regarding due process and a “guilty until proven innocent” mindset.
