CLEVELAND, Ohio -- “Company” is perhaps the most inventive and funniest musical of Playhouse Square’s current Broadway season. The production,But it may not be everyone’s cup of tea, or in this case, glass of bourbon. The show can be meandering and indecisive, and its plot is razor-thin.
Harry and Sarah show her the passionate side of marriage, while Peter and Susan reveal that wedded bliss can be an illusion. David and Jenny teach her marriage is about compromise and sacrifice, while Jamie and Paul are proof relationships can be equal parts fear and joy. Joanne and Larry embody the duality of marriage: comfortable like a cozy sweater, yet as isolating as a deserted island.
The humor is just as exhilarating as Furth’s book counters Bobby’s melancholy with a side-splitting mix of physical comedy, funny quips and off-beat monologues. Allison , Bittner and Rodin , in particular, make the most of their stage time, showing off their comedic chops and eliciting the most laughs.
