One of the state’s largest property insurance companies has agreed to pay a $1 million fine after being accused of mistreating its policyholders in the wake of Hurricane Ian.

FILE - Bruce Hickey, 70, walks along the waterfront, now littered with debris including shrimp boats, in the mobile home park where he and his wife, Kathy, have a winter home on San Carlos Island, Fort Myers Beach, Fla., on Oct. 5, 2022, one week after the passage of Hurricane Ian. Record hot ocean temperatures and a tardy El Nino are doubling the chances of a nasty Atlantic hurricane season this summer and fall, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said Thursday, Aug. 10, 2023.

But when it came time for policyholders of Heritage Property and Casualty Insurance to file claims, state insurance officials said more than 100 Floridians were mistreated. “Really the primary categories were slow to respond to claims, slow to pay claims, used improperly licensed adjusters and kept poor records,” Friedlander said.Heritage failed to acknowledge receiving the claims of 98 customers within 14 daysHeritage failed to maintain complete claim records for 10 customers
