Not long ago, a curious email arrived in my inbox. Apparently, xHamster, a juggernaut adult website, was launching a chain of adult-themed coffee shops. The first of its 18+ coffee shops would be in the San Fernando Valley, natch, and in Chatsworth, specifically, a neighborhood in the northwest sector known for churning out adult content. The stores would be called xHamster with Cream and would offer"adult-themed custom drinks and free, unfiltered WiFi.
I was surprised, but not exactly shocked. Clearly, porn had officially gone mainstream. The adult coffee shop would be the new, one more racy retail effort to corral customers. Annoyed there was no address listed for the new coffee shop, I emailed xHamster to get the details. And that's when Hawkins pointed out the entire thing was an April Fools' Day joke: The email had arrived April 1st. But I wasn't the only one who'd been intrigued by the 18-and-over coffee shop model.
As for me, personally, I'm a vice president at the company and help explore marketing and business opportunities. I also founded the xHamster Data Center to try to use the vast resources of data we have to try and help people understand sexuality better.Starbucks announced they'd be banning adult content from their WiFi
in response to protests from religious groups. The whole thing was a canard--there was never any real problem to be solved, no epidemic of Starbucks customers looking at adult content in public--but the company decided it wasn't worth the hassle, I suppose. Oddly, we found that there were plenty of people on xHamster who were producing videos at Starbucks.
So, internally, we talked about doing something that could raise awareness or encourage conversation. We're an adult site, so for us to be taken seriously on an issue, we need to show either data or humor. This seemed like a good way to do it.Well, we like to think that we did a good job! That's always the basis of a believable April Fools' Day prank.
I wouldn’t because that’s not the vibe I want as a woman and I think it attracts pervs. But hey let the pervs hang out and no complaints from the rest who go check it out!
