Small-business owners are being urged to report retail crime in a bid to stamp out shoplifting and the abuse of staff. On Monday, Crime Stoppers NSW and the Australian Retailers Association joined forces for a campaign to highlight theft and the poor treatment of retail workers. New figures reported by NSW Police show retail theft has been steadily rising since October 2021, and was up 47.

We all have them or are part of one, so be respectful,” Crime Stoppers NSW CEO Peter Price said. “Australian retailers lose billions of dollars each year in stock loss, absenteeism, and workers’ compensation claims as a result of these crimes. “Retail workers face threats and abuse, both verbal and physical, when confronting shoplifters, putting their own safety and that of nearby shoppers at risk.” Australian Retailers Association CEO Paul Zahra said retail crime came in different forms.
