Roy Hope marked the milestone with a special meal

at the Stanhill Inn in Oswaldtwistle, on Saturday, June 1, surrounded by friends and family. Roy said: “I am out walking every day. The best thing I ever did was catch a 20lb salmon in Scotland!”

His wife, Margaret, who used to worked in the mills in Oswaldtwistle, said: “We had a lovely meal and he had a birthday cake.” Roy was born in Church to parents Ursula and Jim, along with his siblings Betty and Barry, and later moved to Oswaldtwistle where Jim ran a coal merchant. He attended St Andrew’s Primary School as a young boy and then went to technical school opposite the Palladium in Oswaldtwistle.He was a crown green bowler and played for Oswaldtwistle Con Bowling Club and enjoyed playing a game of darts for which he won several trophies.

Roy lives in Roughlee with his wife, Margaret, who he met at a social event in Oswaldtwistle. The couple got married in 1965 at Immanuel Church in Oswaldtwistle and have two children together, John and Janet. When Roy took voluntary redundancy at the age of 57, he and Margaret ran ‘Top Shop’ cafe in Roughlee for seven years.
