Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun appeared in front of the Senate on Tuesday as the company is facing a crisis dealing with safety complaints and whistleblower allegations of prioritizing profits over the quality of their products.on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations on how the company’s safety issues became so prevalent and what was taking so long to address the issues.

According to the complaint, there was a 300% increase in reports of parts that did not meet manufacturer standards after Boeing restarted production of the 737 Max after deadly crashes in 2018 and 2019. The faulty parts were supposed to be removed from production and closely tracked, but the whistleblower said “the 737 program was losing hundreds of non-conforming parts."

While Calhoun denied the company has a culture of retaliation against whistleblowers and the company has also said it is strictly prohibited. Earlier this year, it said it is encouraging workers to raise their voice and had a 500% increase in its “Speak Up” portal. “I would like to speak directly to those who lost loved ones on Lion Air Flight 610 and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302,” Calhoun said, referencing fatal crashes of Boeing 737 Max planes in 2018 and 2019. “I want to personally apologize, on behalf of everyone at Boeing. We are deeply sorry for your losses. Nothing is more important than the safety of the people who step on board our airplanes.

Blumenthal also said Calhoun was prioritizing profits over fixing the company’s culture, an accusation that has also been made by whistleblowers and outside experts in previous hearings.
