Kelpie breeder is selling up after 48 years to spend more time with his human family despite a red-hot marketWhat's next?Peter Austin got his first kelpie — "a feisty little pup" — in 1974.

"Give him a feed at night and a pat after hard day's work and he's pretty happy and ready to go again the next day," Peter said. That year, the 24-year-old started his stud, Working Kelpies of Kirkcaldy. What followed was a life filled with passion for the breed. "We've always tried to promote the value of these dogs as labour, and it's becoming more and more important now because labour is hard to get," Peter said.

"You can't train a dog to work — never have been able to — but you can educate those with a lot of natural ability," Peter said.
