A representative explained that “customers book their trip as usual and then enter their dates, hotel and holiday costs into a dedicated website. The site then generates a quote for the guarantee, setting out the reimbursements that would be available.” In the case of a wet forecast, customers with the guarantee do not need to take any action. Sharing their feedback with Sensible Weather, a Lovat customer noted “we received an email every morning to inform us if we were eligible for compensation. We didn’t have to do anything.”

The average cost of the guarantee – which is supplementary to the holiday cost – is £43 per booking. When Lovat launched the option last year, it says that one customer got nearly the entire cost of their holiday refunded. “They were delighted”, says Torie, who adds that around five per of Lovat’s customers are currently opting to add the guarantee.

During the peak snowsport season at the start of this year, lack of snowfall forced European ski resorts such as Muttereralm in Austria, and Saint-Colomban-des-Villards in France, to close.
