To better address the shortage of coding skills in South Africa, companies should change the way they hire, says the CEO of a local coding upskiller.
“Many companies still cling to outdated recruitment and retention strategies that are no longer effective in meeting their needs, despite the continuous evolution of technology,” Hlophe explains in a statement sent to Hypertext. Often, people who learn how to programme without any formal training will emerge from origins with limited resources, or from unfavourable economic environments. Self-taught coders can be as skilled as academically produced coders, and sometimes they can supersede their formalised brethren.“In traditional recruitment, hiring managers typically just skim through CVs, focusing on ticking boxes rather than truly evaluating candidates’ skills and capabilities.
These shifts in hiring culture not only combat bias but welcome new talent. Companies can use these practical assessments to identify skilled people and improve their hiring processes.
