JOHANNESBURG - Johannesburg mayor Herman Mashaba on Wednesday announced a R20-billion investment which will create affordable housing for the city by releasing city-owned properties to the private sector for development.
Mashaba described the investment as the "the single biggest property investment the city of Johannesburg has ever made through private sector development."We intended to change the inner-city into a construction site as we seek to create jobs and improve the Johannesburg economy," said Mashaba. Construction for the initiative will begin within six months and will include properties in central Johannesburg, Yeoville, Berea, Vrededorp, Fairview, Salisbury, Marshalltown, Wolhuter and Turffontein.
In total, Mashaba expects the first group of developments could yield 10,096 job opportunities within the city and provide approximately 6,500 housing units.
