Judges say Manchester Ship Canal Company can bring a claim against United Utilities over sewage dumps.

The owners of the Manchester Ship Canal have won an appeal permitting them to take action against a water company over the dumping of raw sewage into the waterway.

A canal company spokeswoman said they were pleased with the decision, while the water firm said it was "considering the implications" of the ruling. The ship canal, built in 1890s, stretches 36 miles from the Mersey Estuary to Salford Quays. They found the canal company was entitled to bring a nuisance or trespass claim for these incidents, even in instances when there had been "no negligence or deliberate misconduct" by United Utilities.
