New figures show asking rents plateauing or even falling in some markets after several years of sustained increase.

Already a subscriber?Mark Matthews did not raise the rent on his three-bedroom investment property in April, but kept the Christies Beach rental house at $410 a week.

“We’re almost at the maximum,” he says. “When I look at the cost of rents and increases over the last couple of years, I don’t foresee that same pressure and increase in years.” Sydney house rents flatlined from March – for the first time in 1 ½ years – and Perth’s house rents were unchanged for the first time in almost three years.
