The floods ravaged parts of KwaZulu-Natal leaving a trail of destruction, killing 67 people and leaving over 1 000 people displaced.in the eThekwini Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal.

Maimane and DA Federal chairperson Athol Trollip visited community members at the Burlington Community Hall. This is a temporary shelter for over 100 people who have been displaced by last week’s floods.Maimane says government has failed the people. He says: “In 2017, the warnings were there and no action was taken by the government. Therefore, I think that it’s about time that we actually understand that the tragedies that are occurring now are fundamentally in other places because of the failure of government.”

“Therefore we must take on the municipality of eThekwini, we must allocate financial resources. I would urge that we come here and sort out the drainage system because it’s now a question of urgency. I’ve called on citizens living in the flood line to be moved to communities where there are not. It’s an urgent requirement.”

The eThekwini Municipality estimates that the interim cost of damage caused by the recent floods is around R658 million.
