The elderly in the township of Moses Mabida say they live in constant fear over rising GBV cases.

Women embark on a nationwide march against gender-based violence from Struben Street to the Union Buildings in Pretoria on 01 August 2018.Gender-based violence against women and children continues to terrorise the community of Nqweba formerly known as Kirkwood in the Eastern Cape.

She says although the matter was reported to the police and the perpetrator arrested, he was later released on bail. Although the small town is the centre of citrus production during this harvest season, GBV and crime have spiralled out of control, according to one resident. “We as a community need to work with the police and assist them just like we did here so we are calling on the community to stand for what is right even if something is happening in your house or by your son report that to the police.”
