Conan Byrne has revealed that he was earning well below the new minimum wage for professionals in the League of Ireland when he won the league 11 years ago with St Patrick’s Athletic.

He famously scored all four goals against Shamrock Rovers in Tallaght Stadium during that season as Pat's recorded a thumping win over their Dublin rivals.The former UCD and Sporting Fingal man was reacting to comments made earlier on Monday by Cork City boss Tim Clancy regarding wages in the top-flight.

“You have clubs that are nowhere near European positions paying two, two-and-a-half, three grand a week to players that won’t be able to get Europe next season.
