A handful of retrenched workers gathered outside the department's offices in Pretoria.

Communication and Digital Technologies Minister Solly Malatsi has committed to getting to the bottom of issues raised by retrenched South African Post Office workers.

A handful of retrenched workers gathered outside the department’s offices in Pretoria to raise their grievances. According to the workers, they have battled to access their UIF and pension benefits due to paperwork that was not submitted. The workers also say they do not want to receive their severance packages in three tranches while they have no access to any other funds. Malatsi says he plans to meet with the business rescue practitioners to get answers.

“The most important thing about the timeline is that it is linked to the availability of the resources. The Post Office as it is has had to go through that chapter because it didn’t have the resources that it needed to operate optimally. The key link is that the people need to be constantly informed of developments because where they are they are disempowered by not having constant updates and that’s something we can easily fix because it is a matter of communication.
