Cartel’s appointment was announced to Rothschild staff early on Monday morning.

Already a subscriber?Rothschild & Co has lured Alex Cartel, Citi’s head of investment banking, capital markets and advisory for Australia and New Zealand, Street Talk understands. He would serve as Rothschild’s head of global advisory, Australia, and report to regional CEO Marshall Baillieu.

It’s a high-power addition to Rothschild’s lineup. Cartel had been Citi’s investment banking boss, overseeing its M&A advisory division as well as ECM and DCM work in Australia. He has worked on several landmark transactions including Santos’s $22 billion merger with Oil Search, Unibail-Rodamco’s $US25 billion takeover of Westfield, and BHP’s $9.6 billion acquisition of Oz Minerals. He’s also been the president of the Takeovers Panel since 2019.

For Rothschild, the hire tees in well with its model of combining global sector coverage and independent advisory for clients, with several of whom it’s had long-term relationships. Its recent deals including PEP’s $1 billion acquisition of Serenitas with Mirvac, and MMA Offshore on its $1 billion takeover by Cyan Renewables.has co-edited Street Talk since 2009, specialising in private equity, investment banking, M&A and equity capital markets stories.
