Public sector unions will be meeting this week for a labour caucus as they wrap up consultations with their members ahead of the start of formal wage talks in the sector next month.

They are calling for good faith negotiations in the public sector from ministers in the new Government of National Unity . The two-year 3% wage agreement in the public sector comes to an end in March 2025 with workers pushing to have a consolidated inflation-linked demand that will be accommodated in the October mid-term budget policy statement by the finance minister.

“We will be meeting today from the Fedusa group and Cosatu group where we look at key issues that we’ve highlighted from both sides, and we will consolidate as labour so that when we go to the employer. We will have consolidated input from Cosatu and Fedusa, especially from the PSA side. It’s futile for different unions to go in with different demands and with different percentages.
