Relativity Space—the company backed by serial entrepreneur Mark Cuban that is building a 3D rocket—announced yet another customer win today

. These two companies are firmly in the medium-satellite class market. Spaceflight, by contrast, focuses on smaller satellites -- CubeSats and similar spacecraft that are used by educational institutions and small companies for technology demonstrations, scientific experiments or Earth observations.

"Really from Day 1, we wanted to partner with somebody like Spaceflight, which has experience doing this," said Tim Ellis, Relativity's co-founder and CEO, in an interview. He added that a part of his company's vision is to bring more space access through affordable launches, which is why they have invested in a unique 3D printing process for building rockets and innovating rocket types rapidly.

The 3D-printed Terran 1 rocket will not need a lot of modification, save for some items such as the payload structure, Ellis said. He added that the rocket, which is smaller than a typical SpaceX Falcon 9, may be easier for Spaceflight to book since Terran carries less mass, allowing for fewer payloads.

Ellis added that three major deals in a month will be an attraction as the company looks to sign even more customers this year:"It's quite a lot of momentum," he said. The company has raised around $45 million in venture funding , and Series A and B rounds; a Series C is planned shortly. Relativity will launch from Cape Canaveral's Launch Complex 16 under a deal with the U.S. Air Force. Relativity will have its test launch in 2020, and plans three launches in 2021 before accelerating to a pace of between 12 and 24 launches a year.I've been writing about space exploration since 2004.
