Water has subsided at Riverlands near Malmesbury, allowing for people to return home.

This, after three retention dams on a farm burst their banks last week, resulting in flooding which caused serious damage to homes, decimated water infrastructure and halted the electricity supply.

Fear struck the Riverlands community as they describe hearing something sounding like thunder. A torrent of water rushed through a part of the area once again, less than two weeks after three dams caused flooding. The community and the Swartland municipality were busy with mop-up operations when the latest incident occurred.

Emergency evacuations were conducted, but the water has subsided, allowing for people to return home. Over a hundred people are however still provided with shelter in two community facilities.“Our water pipes physically washed out of the ground and now we have to rebuild that network and that will unfortunately take several weeks.
