Human Sciences Research Council indicates that South Africa is facing severe food insecurity…

Two weeks ago, the World Food Programme reported that food insecurity in the world's youngest nation had reached extreme levels.Professor Thokozani Simelane of the HSRC states that the study sampled over 43 000 households in each district across the country since 2019.

The survey was conducted at the request of the government, specifically the agriculture department, to assess the impact of their various interventions. Simelane highlights that urban areas are more affected by food insecurity than rural areas contrary to common belief. “You’ll find that contrary to what has been believed, urban areas are better off than rural areas. In reality, the urban areas are very much affected by food insecurity because the land available is limited and they have limited means of producing their own food. Whereas in rural areas, on the other side, there is plenty of land. But the agricultural activities of production have been abandoned,” Simelane says.
