Analysis: Trump is underestimating the damage higher tariffs could have on U.S. economy

You see the tariffs we’re doing? Because they broke the deal. ... They broke the deal. So they’re flying in. The vice premier tomorrow is flying in, but they broke the deal. They can’t do that. So they’ll be paying. If we don’t make the deal, nothing wrong with taking in more than $100 billion a year.

"U.S. stocks were priced to open lower on Thursday with futures on both the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average down about 0.8%. The broad index was down 0.2% at the close on Wednesday, having been up as much as 0.5% earlier in the day.". The S&P 500 was down 2.2 percent over the first three days of this week,"only about a month’s worth of gains; markets were lower as recently as early April," the New York Times's Neil Irwin.

At that level, of $47 a share, Uber would be valued at about $86 billion — well below the $100 billion that the company had forecast last month.Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar testifies before a House Appropriations subcommittee on Capitol Hill in March. Washington.

You don't understand WP

But Trump is 'the King of Losses' so he welcomes the damage (mostly to Americans).

The Trump administration has so far imposed $72 billion worth of new taxes on Americans by levying tariffs on thousands of products: analysis

trump increases tariffs on Chinese goods which is paid by AMERICANS who buy the goods. When are the idiotic republicans going to realize this. You can’t be that stupid.

you begin to really understand how this man has crashed casinos, blown his inheritance, and has dozens of failed businesses. How many times has this man had to be bailed out? enough times that american banks would not lend him money. That's how he got stuck in bed with russia.

If we take the president at his word, he believes tariffs are a benefit to the economy. So, yes. I'd say he's underestimating the damage. He's pegging the damage at 0%.

Analysis by the Washington compost is laughable too bad they couldn't tell the truth Trump is a genius

Time to start setting up supply chains in other countries, Vietnam, Taiwan, Japan, Mexico, and gulp, maybe the US. Less shipping thru the South China Sea. But we need stable tariffs, long term to shift manufacturing to other places. US execs need to start working again.

Trump does not underestimate the damage of higher tariffs. His intellectual capacity does not rise to the level of estimating anything.

Donny!! U Forgot your clubs...!

morgfair Unfortunately Trump doesn't understand the basic concepts of international economics. The tariffs will be paid by US consumers.

The only thing Trump never has, and never will, underestimate, is his own abilities and beliefs. The Greeks called that 'hubris', and knew it was the gravest danger to democracy.

Import tariffs are paid by the buyers not the seller. Americans will pay bill not China.

mhoptman This newspaper is overestimating that Trump is thinking at all.

morgfair We he is an idiot so who is surprised?

TRAITOR !

Trump is begging to start a war.

MiaFarrow He's strong arming China. I don't mind, because they've decimated our Manufacturing Industry. We should never rely on a foreign power to make any of our intellectual property. Americans have lost work by the millions due to China.

yeh, if the slaves refuse to buy at the higher prices their slavemasters get it in their bank accounts.

You only post Analysis or Opinions no facts?

Just like his businesses!

Of course he's underestimating. He doesn't want his supporters to know how badly he is screwing them

Wrong again Post‼️

does he care? Will go Bankrupt

Democrats are scared of China. Because they are fed by China. Let’s go president Trump!

Analysis from the WashingtonPost! 😂😂😂

The idiot thinks China is paying tariffs to US... 😂

realDonaldTrump believes in the bluffing game. He is not dealing with his suppliers, whom he can bluff and bully. He is dealing with some very seasoned negotiators who have the interestof their country at heart. Higher tariffs only hurt the American consumer. nytimes HuffPost

When you're left with a filthy house it takes some time to clean it up. Trump will have the house cleaned soon.

DerangedDonald doesn't give a shit about the economy or the American people. Raise tarrifs and raise the cost for Americans!

Looking to file bankruptcy of America.. no way! The man, Trump, is a fraud, s tax cheat, a congenital con!

Ugh 😑 non of you clearly know how tariffs work... yeah let’s just keep paying far more. I swear it doesn’t matter what he does you all will just not stop whining

Trump couldn’t care less if the economy is smashed to pieces. The creature has enough money to live a lavish life for his great great grandchildren. It’s the common men n women who will feel the brunt of his stupidity.

No WAPO. Trump doesn't care!!! Big difference.

Says the newspaper that has been 100% wrong about every one of Trumps economic actions since January 2017...

Biggest loser in US . Why is anyone surprised? He is by all accounts a terrible businessman.

Ya, you guys said that last year, and here we are...

STOP acting like he cares Have you been asleep for the last 2 yrs? Trump cares about money & his ego nothing else, he likes playing the 'tough' guy & doesn't give a shit what comes from it. There is no plan he has no idea what he's doing

In realDonaldTrump defense, he underestimates a lot

Dear follow Americans: Continue to be addicted to cheap Chinese goods, keep taking the Chinese baits and give away the future of our country.

Groceries are going up at an astounding rate! It is getting harder to stay within a budget. One example is fresh tomatoes, they are expected to go up 40% very soon! This is hard on financially strapped families!

Analysis: The Democrat ran media has shit all over the free press. Journalism is dead! Their goal is to manipulate the opinions of the weak. fakenews mediamanipulation feedthesheep democratranmedia fakejournalist

“Could” LMAO

Billion Dollar Loser..who bails him OUT..we do ...get real.

It's not underestimating, it's not giving a flying f&k about anyone who this will hurt

ToryNewmyer Does 45 ever think anything through before he does it? What a joke!

No kidding?

“Underestimating” insinuates an understanding of tarrifs... or the economy... or math, in general. Trump doesn’t know a single fucking thing.

Didn’t you fools also predict a financial Armageddon if Trump was elected? How did that turn out?

Trump is a complete moron when it comes to economics. Following his economic ideas will lead to a cesspool economy.

I think the guy is proving that he intends to make America Great Again. Lowest unemployment is a major achievement even if it means locking out immigrants. I wish African leaders would stop making their families great but their countries. Same to Governor

BillionDollarDISTRACTION.

Wrong again. Biden is a coward. Need to stand up to these gangsters now.

King Trump only cares about King Trump!

You are the bussinessman Mr President Just believe in your self . .. make america great again

Economic buffoon (but we already knew that). ImpeachmentHearingsNow

Stating the obvious.

No he isn’t, he doesn’t care. When they die, they dont care what we are left with. WE have to protect our OWN future, the gop is lining pockets for TODAY only. They feel like f it, it’s over anyway.

China cheats and should pay for it. The tariffs are on a country not on product, manufacture domestically or import from somewhere else, if you can't do then it would show how weak US has become. Trump has anyways reduced corporates taxes so tariffs can make up for them.

Would you prefer we keep getting nailed as well WP ... it’s ok for other counties to pile on here , is that what you prefer

MiaFarrow He isn't underestimating the damage. Trump has no basic concept of a tariff. He believes, for some inane reason, that China is paying the tariff bill. That, alone, shows a lack of basic understanding.

Obviously, based on his business failures, Trump doesn’t understand the economy or business. He just understands how to tweet and attack someone who he thinks is weaker!

This runs on the assumption that trump has even the slightest idea what he's doing, when all evidence points to the contrary.

It’s actually quite simple as the very stable genius isn’t capable of looking at an issue from every angle before making an informed decision. Rather he goes by (his ample) gut and blames others when things go wrong.

'I'm so HOT'

WaPo, has underestimated truthful journalism.

So what else is new, Trump is clueless and a clown🤡. We expect our leaders to take advice from experts and the BillionDollarLooser has surrounded himself with idiots and lobbyists. He takes advice from Putin!

You're assuming he cares or understands. PutinsGOP TrumpCrimeFamily BillionDollarLoser

Trump does not understand tariffs. Americans pay the tariffs. Tariffs are a long run play. To work there have to be companies in the US that will make a competitive product. They have to trust that Trump will maintain the tariffs and higher prices. It takes years.

You been saying this nonsense since the first mention of tariffs during the campaign not only have you been wrong but the exact opposite of what you have said has happened the economy is the strongest its been in any time in history. In the dark ages you'd have been beheaded

But Trump is a great business man. WRONG.

He doesn't pay taxes so he doesn't care if we have to

He could become even more popular

We have been so entrenched in Chinese economy for so long it will not change overnight with drastic unattainable measures

No he’s not...he doesn’t care that it’ll hurt us. It’s all about one person, Trump. He looks like the tough guy. That’s his persona and the people that voted for him love that so they’ll accept higher prices at the grocery stores and then blame democrats for it. Typical MO

*Trump doesn't understand economics at all. FTFY

Actually he doesn’t give a damn

Trump may not get what damage his tariffs are doing but Stock Market investors sure do. 😳

Meh. All your wise men said in 2016 the economy would tank under Trump, too.

Good, if he's counting on the economy to get reelected.

He’s not estimating them at all.

He doesn’t care! When will people realize everything he does, it’s to benefit him & hurt USA, it’s part of the deal. Follow the money

😲

He's not underestimating, he's not even considering it. He's got the brains of a Kewpie doll.

Analysis : trump destroys everything and you’re giving him too much credit for thinking. He doesn’t.

Trump isn't under or overestimating anything. He isn't estimating. He's a primordial creature that lashes out based on instinct.

Let him worry about the economy and you worry about sales...tick tock

Because he is a terrible business man

duh. you think?
