“We received a call early hours of this morning that there is a building which is on fire at the corner of Jani and Jullies street in Jeppestown. Yes on arrival we found the building well alight, we started evacuating the residents who were inside the building. After that while we were conducting our firefighting operations here, there were people who came out of the building and were injured, they also suffered some smoke inhalation.
One of those patients who was critically injured received medical attention on site from our paramedics and he was later transported to Charlotte Maxeke, the other two were taken to Hillbrow for medical attention. We can also confirm that we recovered four bodies – they were confirmed dead on the scene. The cause of the fire is still subject to investigations; we also have our disaster management who are on site to reflect on the affected residences.
The co-ordinator of Marshalltown Fire Justice Campaign and also president of the General Industries Workers Union of South Africa, Mametlwe Sebei, says “We have learned with shock and sadness of the news of another tragic fire in Jeppestown. The new fire that killed people is deplorable and represents an indictment against the elite that has allowed the city to rot under their watch with tragic consequences for ordinary people.
