A new online database helps fill this gap by rating the 500 largest U.S. public companies on the transparency and quality of their paid parental leave policies.The U.S. is among the only developed countries without a national paid parental leave law. So most U.S. employees rely on voluntary employer benefits for paid parental leave.

Companies that do not state on their website whether they provide paid parental leave received the lowest transparency score of one. Companies that confirm on their website that they provide paid parental leave, but do not include policy details, received a score of two. Companies that confirm on their website that they provide paid parental leave, and include policy details, received the highest transparency score of three.

Among those 51 high-performing companies, Cookler identified the top-ten list by selecting the companies that offered the longest paid parental leave for primary parents after the non-C-section birth of a child. In the database, companies are coded red if they scored a one on transparency, and they scored a one or two on quality. In other words, red-coded companies do not state on their website whether they provide paid parental leave, and they either provide no paid parental leave or paid leave of an unknown amount.Paid parental leave is a highly valued employee benefit, particularly for women.
