A new security hut described as “very attractive” but the “size of a large mobile home” built beside the Department of Finance cost nearly €1.5m, the Office of Public Works has revealed.

There was significant underground works. There was significant ventilation, data, communications, CCTV, wrapping into a control centre, significant substructure, significant rerouting of underground services.In New York, Tánaiste Micheál Martin described the cost of the security hut as “shocking” and called for a review of the cost.
The report stated a “simple assessment” was conducted for the bike shed and this “should have placed a greater emphasis on the value for money aspects of the project”. At the Finance Committee meeting, Mr Conlon said it was ultimately built in “probably the most expensive area that could have been chosen” beside the National Gallery on Merrion Street.
