The workers want the new wage increases to be factored in the Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement , which will be tabled by the Finance Minister later this month.
South African Policing Union spokesperson Lesiba Thobakgale says, “We have tabled our 16 demands on the cost of living adjustment. We have tabled an offer of 12%. The offer that the employer has brought is 3%. That was the last offer tabled and in the meeting yesterday, the employer did not want to have any movement. They did not want to improve their offer on the cost of living adjustment.”
“They did not want to bring anything positive in terms of the other demands that we have made and avoiding the issue of a stalemate, what we did … we have then agreed as council to say, let us then now go into a process of facilitation. Where now somebody independent as independent commissioner would come in and try to bring the parties together. So that we can try to work out on other areas at the end of the day … so we can try to come closer to one another,” adds Thobakgale.
