The retail industry suffered another blow after Dressbarn's parent company announced it was shutting down the clothing chain's operations

"It has been our pleasure to serve you, making it all the more difficult to let you know that the decision has been made to begin winding down the Dressbarn business," Gary Muto, CEO of Dressbarn's parent company Ascena Retail Group, said in a statement.Muto said the company will eventually close all its roughly 650 Dressbarn stores, but that they remain open for now. Ascena indicated the winddown would not affect its other brands — which include Ann Taylor and Loft.

"While the closure of Dressbarn was not inevitable, given the company's dire performance it comes as little surprise that Ascena has decided to head for the exit," said Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData Retail."Over the past few years, Dressbarn has lost customers, sales and share; it has also been unprofitable. Over recent quarters, those losses have accelerated and have shown no signs of reversing.

Good. I used to get most of my business clothes from them. They sold traditional two piece business suits & non-spandex button down blouses. In the last 10 yrs, I'd walk in & walk out of the store in 2 minutes. They lost loyal customers & chased people who didn't want them.

Devastated- doesn’t describe it

So much winning. Here is another large business that is failing because of Trump

I like Dress Barn, but have had hit or miss luck with the clothing options over the past few years.

Never shopped there. Or most of the other stores that are closing. I'm amazed they stayed open as long as they did.

Amazon goons strike again. Public saddened but resilient. And ordering some more shit, w/ 2-day shipping as we tweet.

There are just so many things about DressBarn, that are the reason they're going out of business, it's hard to make a barn sound stylish for one

Well I’m going to try to take advantage of the sale & stock up. I could always find something nice to wear to work there .. bummer

ezzie67_linda HOW are all these businesses closing, AND NOT affecting to unemployment numbers? I’m not believing they’re as great as Trump is screaming...sorry, not buying it!

So many stores of all kinds are closing yet trump claims things are great...NO, they are NOT!

Yet another victim to Amazon's online platform.

Guess the trump economy isn't working for everyone.

Just Google mapped it and NJ is littered with it. Another NJ based retailer closing down.

First of all why would you call a plus sized women’s store dress barn Did they never consider rebranding and seeing how that panned out?

Is this MAGA?

real_farmacist Really sad to see all the derision here about a business closing. It was started in 1962, which is a long time these days. As a boutique clothing store, it was a fun place to shop. I found it a fun place to work, and it’s a blow losing my job. So I’m sad. 😢

They closed years ago in my area, didn’t know any were still around.

This is very sad, but also dress barn should hit me up when they start having liquidation sales.

Wow! We’re really winning!

Wow, Ford...now other business. Shame on realDonaldTrump

Time to shop!!

Hahhahaha..Dress Barn closing is a blow to the industry? Your so dramatic cnn

I haven't stepped foot in a Dress Barn in over 15 years. Sorry, too high, and not stylish.

Never heard of it!

Can't get their cheap shit from China?

Fake news cnn

So much winning!!!

Thanks OBAMA! Oh...wait.

My sister in love(law) will be heartbroken! I always thought they was too pricey$$$$ just like Catherine's. Sorry for employees.

Omg. I thought DressBarn was a childhood memory I made up. 😂 I had no idea they were an actual store & still in business....

Modern customers expect a more comprehensive personalized experience, where context, intent, and channels come into play. If your store can't provide all these you are going to loose for sure.

When the brand Zac and Rachel became their house brand they were doomed. Women are tired of poorly made, ill-fitting polyester clothes and style and color options the same no matter where you go. I haven't seen a silk blouse in a decade.

Interesting... market factors and the needs of customers change. Dressbarn used to be my go-to place for affordable work dresses, but since starting to invest in nicer long-term pieces and switching to a business like letote, I stopped going there entirely.

It’s because they got really expensive and the quality is terrible

Nothin says classy like a word with BARN in it...

Pricy & poor quality? I always felt like an older woman shopping here ~ ya know, back in the days of having real money to spend. Ha!

OH NO!!!! They can’t be. I rely on them totally!!!!!!

realDonaldTrump so much winning. So much good economy.

Firstly, these comments really outline the type of scum that populates this country. Secondly, you pour over every indignant coal worker who aggressively demands never to be expected to be retrained despite his industry dying. Will you be doing a show about retail workers?

Hopefully the vast majority of the employees are Democrats

All these Liberals complaining about Dressbarn closing, hadn’t heard of the store until today. NotAThriftStore YouDontWearDresses TuesdayTruths TuesdayThoughts

So sad

Keep shopping at Amazon. Malls are next on the chopping block.

dressbarn BS company will go down in flames. ascena retail. When stock is less then a cup of coffee writing is on the wall.

Never seen one in my life. Maybe it's because am in Texas

DerangedDonald base tired of winning.

Un...What goes around comes around...hoping ALL the hard workers find something b/c they got caught in the line of fire!!😌wholetime it was inevitable💅🏾 uh huh greed caught up Dressbarn TuesdayThoughts TuesdayMotivation

Sorry for those who lost their jobs. They have cute clothes but so many companies have gone super casual.

The clothing was low quality and overpriced!

I'm sorry to hear this. I used them for the fashion shows f ou r the Wyoming Valley Woman's Club. We all loved the feminine styles and reasonable prices.

ConstanceAshay

Watch this also be because of vulture capitalism, like what happened to Sears and Toys R’ Us

Who has money to shop? Other than the well off

First Payless (shocked), now Dressbarn (not surprising), who’s next is this booming economy we have going on?

Please give my mom privacy during this very difficult time.

Sorry ladies 45 to 75

Why would anyone buy a dress at a business with the name of Dress Barn? Such an unappealing name.

We still had quite a few around here.

How will this news affect the Alabama Governor’s clothing sponsorship?

Thanks Trump!

Back in the day, Dressbarn was a ‘go to’ place for women’s professional and corporate attire for middle class consumers

When was the last time you saw a ‘DressBarn’ commercial?

NOOOO! I love shopping at DressBarn!

EhudHoops the trump economy

It’s been a long time coming.

Dress Barn got new clothes buyers some years back and the shoulder pads went away. They had some really, really cute dresses. Sorry to hear this.

Not surprised. Not much traffic in stores

Blame the millennials for not wanting to dress like the Golden Girls

I loved this store. I'm so sorry to hear that.

My mom loved this store.

That's a shame. Their clothes look ok, but, I could never bring myself to shop at a place called Dress Barn.

Maybe try a name change first....

Make America great again

My mother will be soooo disappointed. I'm sure lots of women in Richmond Virginia will be heartbroken. The only place I can go & don't struggle with my size in dress clothes. This is sad.

With a name like dressbarn how did they stay open for 60 years?

Another business thrives in Trump’s America! MAGA BeBest

Oh yeah, Dress Barn it’s right around the corner next to “Horse Shoes”

Is it possible Dressbarn had to close not because of online sales, but because less women were going into teaching?

Damn, KellyannePolls is going to be inconsolable.

On line will win.

No!!!

That's unfortunate; very sorry to see any one lose a job. But I don't think i've seen a Dress Barn in at least 5 or 6 years.

like magazines and newspapers, we dont need em anymore.

There styles are not really that good so it is really not a big surprise!¡

Honestly, I've never even heard of them.

Amazon is killing it.

Where will .IvankaTrump shitty remaining clothes end up then?

Did they sell dresses for horses?

Online sales have changed how America shops 🤷🏽‍♀️

Nobody even knew they were still around bro
