South Africa’s mental health care system requires significant reform and increased funding to provide equal access to all.
The walk, which drew over 1 000 participants, aimed to highlight mental health issues ahead of World Mental Health Day. Pillay and other mental health care workers reported a sharp rise in mental health cases since the COVID-19 pandemic. “We need major mental health advocacy,” said Pillay. “Mental health care users and their families need to unite behind a common cause and put pressure on both public and private health systems to improve the benefits for mental health.”Professor Bonginkosi Chiliza, head of the psychiatry department at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, also noted an increase in patients since the pandemic, particularly teenagers and students struggling with anxiety after being forced into virtual learning.
