The CUT in the Free State has launched a food bank aimed at addressing food insecurity on its campus

This initiative comes after a donation of R182 000 from Vice-Chancellor and Principal Prof. Pamela Dube, who used payment from a speaking engagement to support the program.

Civil engineering student Retshidisitswe Nchochoba, a beneficiary, explains the importance of the support, “The unit is helping us as unfunded students to be able to eat, dress well, and bathe so that we are able to come to campus.” The program initially began by providing meals during exam periods and has now grown to offer daily meals. Students are referred to the wellness unit by the SRC and must provide documentation to show they are unfunded.Nchochoba talks about the selection process for the project.

Metsing says, “The donation is more than we thought we were going to have. Initially, it’s the first donation of R180 000. It is the first one and particularly coming from the VC. It will be easier for everyone to understand the importance of it.
