The tests were taken last month during the routine raw water sampling from five sites.

The Department of Water and Sanitation says it has detected the presence of cholera in the Vaal and Harts Rivers in North West and Northern Cape.

The Department has advised communities and water users along the Harts and Vaal Rivers from Christiana downstream to be careful when using untreated water.Department spokesperson Wisani Mabasa says, “During the routine raw water sampling in September, water from five sites; namely Wentzel Dam, Schweizer Reneke, Christiana, Barkley West Caravan Park and Douglas Weir indicated the presence of cholera. Communities are advised not to drink or come into contact with the raw water from the rivers.
