According to the UDC data, prison gangs have been largely responsible for the drug trade inside Utah state prisons. In exchange for pleading guilty to murder, Valdez’s defense attorney, George Wright made sure that the judge was aware of a plea deal the DA had given his client. He referred to two first-degree felonies for Valdez being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.
2News Investigates requested documents for drug interdiction plans from UDC. We asked for monthly search reports submitted to Bart Mortensen, the warden of the Utah State Correctional Facility in Salt Lake – and Kristin Keisel, the warden at the prison in Gunnison. We also requested data from the chiefs of security.
In UDC’s summary, they reported that 48,303 people went through body scanners in the screening building. That requires the law enforcement bureau to intercept intelligence, listening to inmate phone calls, trying to find out who the major players are.
