The North African country still occupies the Western Sahara.

The African National Congress has ordered the deputy chairperson of its International Relations Sub-committee Obed Bapela to explain what it says was a misrepresentation of the party on his trip to Morocco.

Bapela is facing backlash for allegedly calling for the intensification of economic ties with Morocco.ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula says the party has a principled and long-standing position of solidarity with the people of Western Sahara. The ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula says the party has always aligned itself with the struggles of the oppressed people all over the world.

He has reaffirmed the ANC’s long-standing position at the 55th national conference, which is the unequivocal support for Western Sahara and call for its decolonisation. Mbalula also says the ANC has been clear that Morocco’s occupation of Western Sahara violates international law and the United Nations resolutions must be implemented.
