in the Eastern Cape is under way. The funeral is held at KwaBhala in their homestead, while another funeral of 11 people is under way in Lambasi. A family member from the Mhatu family, Mkhuseli Mhatu says the deceased left a deep void.
“When we heard that we have these four members who’ve just recently passed away we felt bitter, and that, for example, if there was any feud between the person or persons who shot them, we were going to plead with them before they did that so that we reap the fruits from these four persons, which is inclusive of our grandson. In our family they were very good, they were very much assistive,” says Mhatu.
A 45-year-old suspect has been arrested in connection with the murders. Bereaved families started with traditional ritual of fetching spirits of the deceased from the houses in which they were killed. A member of one of the bereaved families Monwabisi Sinqina, explaining what the ritual entails, says, “We came here to their spirits because according to our belief, their spirits are still here. After this, they will go to their resting places as they came from different households. We feel better after one person was arrested even though we heard that they are four. We don’t know where the other three is or what they are doing.
