More than 200 people have been evacuated in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan area, in the Eastern Cape due to flooding following heavy rain last night.
Acting Executive Director for Safety and Security in the Metro, Shadrack Sibiya, says disaster management teams are on the ground coordinating relief efforts. “We are expecting more evacuations, and we got more resources in the form of trucks that would assist us as the light vehicles cannot access certain areas, so we are continuing to evacuate people.”There are also concerns about the condition of the bridge over the Kruis River on the Rocklands Road leading to Kariega.
Ali Sablay, from the humanitarian organisation Gift of the Givers, says, “The areas of KwaZakele, New Brighton, Motherwell and the local informal settlement of farming location are currently out of electricity. Water levels are rising rapidly and most of these areas are cut off currently.
