Ask people what Bury is famous for and a large proportion will instantly say 'the market'. But exactly a year ago 49 stallholders who traded from the vast indoor hall there were thrown into uncertainty after the discovery of RAAC in the roof. Traders were given just a few hours notice that the building was to be closed and since that day the doors to the indoor hall have remained firmly shut for safety reasons.
Busy junction taped off as emergency services descend following crash Traders have since been presented with the findings of surveyors’ reports into the condition of the hall and Bury council has appointed consultants to work up the costs and the timescales for each of five options for the space. The options include refurbishing the hall, building a new one or developing a ‘Preston style’ covered market.
