Motsoaledi says they are still yet to positively link the deadly chemical to any of the spaza shops.

Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi says it is possible that some spaza shops are using and selling pesticides containing the chemical organophosphate to kill rodents. The incident which occurred earlier this month, resulted in public outrage, with local communities accusing foreign-owned spaza shops in townships of selling expired and unsafe food products.

“It is also being sold to communities for killing rats … where they are not preferring Ratex. So, we believe it came into spaza shops in that manner but we still need to prove scientifically its presence there,” adds Motsoaledi.
