The South African Municipal Workers Union in the Free State has urged the Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana to review the national funding model for municipalities. The union’s provincial secretary Thabang Tseuoa, “As SAMWU in the Free State, our expectation in terms of tomorrow’s Mid Term Review Budget, is for the minister to touch on two aspects, first the national funding model to municipalities.
Meanwhile, the Freedom Front Plus in the province has called on Godongwana to develop enhancement strategies to aid municipalities to generate their own revenue. FF Plus Member of the Provincial Legislature Armand Cloete says municipalities should be strengthened to function on their own as the current model is not working.
“For too long, these municipalities have been heavily reliant on the national fiscus and have not done a lot to ensure that they generate their own revenue. Maybe that’s something that the minister should look into and announce is to ensure these municipalities, which is a different sphere of government, should also start looking into enforcing and strengthening their own revenue income.
