The need for preventative measures has heightened since the rise in food poisoning cases.

Limpopo’s Department of Basic Education has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that learners have food that is safe for consumption at schools.

The Limpopo executive committee yesterday stated that hawkers who wish to sell at schools need to apply for permits. Earlier, a group of hawkers from Phalaborwa, Nkowankowa and Maake handed over a memorandum demanding that they be allowed to operate at schools at the Mopani West District offices in Tzaneen.

The department’s School Safety Deputy Chief Education Specialist, Moloko Lebelo, says ensuring the safety of learners remains their main purpose. “We know that there will always be some critics from all corners of social spectrum but we have to provide guidance and you have to intervene and intervening is about providing precautionary measures so that learners should not be victims of circumstance. In this case to the previous circular that was issued in line with the expectation for a decision,” says Lebelo.
