Community leader Thembile Botman says illegal miners, who are still stuck in a mine shaft in Stilfontein in the North West, cannot resurface on their own as there are no operators on top. This as he says officials are not allowing any operators to be on top.
Residents have been trying to help rescue those who are too weak to come to the surface by themselves.“The system of pulling them with rope is slow, but what we are trying to do, we are trying to be fast. I mean 50 people must at least pull one person up per time and that takes about 45 minutes, only that exercise,” says Botman.Police in the North West have opened an inquest after the body of a suspected illegal miner was retrieved this afternoon from a mine shaft in Stilfontein.
The body was brought to the surface by 50 residents, who volunteered to rescue those who were too weak to come to the surface by themselves.National Police Spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe says the investigations are underway. “We do have a decomposed body that was brought up this afternoon. The circumstances surrounding how this individual or illegal miner died are under investigation. We can confirm that we have registered an inquest into the death. We can confirm that pathologists have arrived. Our detectives are on the scene and necessary crime scene experts to take over the crime scene and so on,” says Mathe.
